Speaker Highlight Part 4

Renny Ramakers
An art critic and co-founder of Droog,
the design company which defined Dutch design
since founded in 1993.

Since its small starting point, Droog has shown its unique way of thinking. It values what it means to be human, including subjectivity, and meaning, with simple and humorous style of presentation. Now, Droog has become an established design firm with a network of talented designers.

Ramakers' role is curator, facilitator, and manufacturer of design works by various designers. Her recent works include the exhibition Pioneers of Change, a collaboration with NY 400 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the U.S.-Netherlands relationship. Held in September 2009 at Governors Island, New York, the exhibition showcased Dutch design, fashion and architecture.

In collaboration with innovative design technology pioneer Waag Society, Droog is working with a network of designers, material suppliers, and manufacturers to develop Downloadable Design. Possible benefits include lower product costs, less transport and less waste since customers can order product blueprint online, adjust to their requirement and have it produced locally. This project is in the design and development phase.

Winai Chairakpong
Founder and Project Director of b|u|g studio,
a multidisciplinary design firm which consists of various
design professionals: from architects, graphic designers,
interior designers, digital artists to film directors.

Winai is the designer behind several outstanding events and exhibitions, including many of TCDC's exhibitions such as Isan Retrospective, Marimekko: Fabrics, Fashion and Architecture, Vivienne Westwood, and Perishable Beauty; Bangkok Fashion Week 2005 and 2006 where he set up the world's first middle-of-the-lake catwalk under a large air dome tent; and launch events for BMW Series 3 and 5.

Besides his long experience, what set Winai's work apart from the rest is his keen sense of observation, attention to detail, and interest in human behaviour. Insightful details are key to his unique and distinguished works. His ability to design personal and engaging experiences is evident in visitors' comments at Isan Retrospective exhibition: "Great to see Isan without a long drive", "I'm from Ubonrachatani and I'm so proud", and "It nearly brought me to tears. Thank you for recognising Isan people."
