The “Always Prepare: Living with changes”
exhibition catalogue explores how we can prepare for the unexpected by reflecting on Thailand’s experiences with floods in 2011 and Japan’s Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995.

The factors that determine how cities respond to natural disasters are different from those facing neighborhoods and individuals. These preparations touch on everything from large buildings to design, household appliances, and even educational materials explaining what to do in the event of an emergency.

A description of the Chao Phraya River basin surrounding and background, with a comprehensive diagram is presented here. Also included are interviews from experts in related fields such as engineering, urban architecture and environment, who expressed their views in key topics such as living with flood from the perspective of land and water, economy, ways of livings, design, individual preparation and the future of the river basin. By exploring the root of the problem the Chao Phraya River basin is facing and combining modern technology with traditional wisdom, we could be “always prepared”.

This book also details the various means of preparation such as the floodways built by the government, the way a coastal village has adapted to live in harmony with water, how to modify power and plumbing systems in existing homes, to DIY emergency kit--these preparations vary in term of size and complexity, but the thread that connects all of them is the creativity that reflects a real understanding of specific environmental conditions and the cooperation among all facets of society. It is only by sharing our knowledge, experience, and expertise that we as a society can hope to find ways of dealing with change and building a sustainable future.
