Chinese is surpassing English in their use in the internet world. Baidu, the search engine that was developped by the Chinese for the Chinese under the Chinese government, emerged in 2000 and enjoyed the advantage over the world’s top search engine like Google, which was unable to provide proper services in China because of the severe censorship. Today, Baidu ranks third in the world in popularity, behind Google and Facebook. More importantly, it is no longer a search engine for the Chinese as it has expanded to offer a variety of other services not unlike Google. It also supports other languages. The transition of Baidu parallels with that of China as an emerging market that will soon become the biggest one in the world.
