In 2009, Sapporo Brewery Ltd. invited people to apply for the lottery that would entitle each of the 250 winners to buy one specially designed, six-pack box of Sapporo Space Beer that cost as high as 10,000 Yen per box. The beer was brewed from the descendant of the Haruna Nijo malting barley that had been harvested from the International Space Stations. The first generation barley seeds had been grown in space for five months in 2006. Sapporo Brewery Limited and the Russian Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with Okayama University, brewed the fourth generation descendant of the barley and hops to create the distinctive fragrance and the slightly dark color that evokes outer space. The few hundred liters of the beer are the by-products of the study on the possibility of food production in space.
