Chiang Mai Creative Design Awards 2012 honours 20 recipients for design excellence
Chiang Mai Creative Design Awards (CDA) 2012 honoured the first 20 recipients of the award at the Lanna Architect Centre, jointly presided over by Vice Governor of Chiang Mai, Worakarn Yokying and the Lord Mayor of Chiang Mai, Tassanai Buranupakorn.
The Creative Design Awards exists to recognise, celebrate and promote good, innovative, and creative designs, highlight uncovered and emerging talent, as well as show the creative best of Chiang Mai to the outside world in a new and exciting light. The Chiang Mai Creative Design Awards is held under the auspices of the Chiang Mai Creative City (CMCC) initiative, which functions as a think tank, network and sharing platform, and catalyst to develop Chiang Mai’s economy through the use of creativity.
A volunteer panel of industry-expert judges, including designers, manufacturers, academics, architects and the media, selected the winners from over one hundreds entries, submitted by the judges themselves and members of the public via the CDA Facebook page as well as the CMCC web site.
Speaking on behalf of the judges, Chairut Usavangkul explained the objectives of the award: “We discussed how to promote design as well as Chiang Mai as a Creative City, and from there the idea of the Chiang Mai Design Awards was born. The CDA 2012 awards focuses on existing products and designs to highlight what is already here.” Martin Venzky-Stalling, another judge, added “design is, and has to be, everywhere, we wanted to demonstrate this, we want to show the world how creative Chiang Mai already is”.
The Chairman of the Chiang Mai Creative City Development Committee, Associate Professor Dr. Nat Vorayos suggested: "This [exhibition] is excellent. It should become a mobile exhibition and be shown at different places and faculties to inspire people and students in Chiang Mai". Premruedee Kullasu the President of the Northern Handicrafts Manufacturers and Exporters Association (NOHMEX) suggested "I would like more of NOHMEX’s members to take note of this award and other activities supporting the Chiang Mai Creative City initiative. I have invited all to come to this exhibition."
