July 2012
This month sees the ending of the thrilling UEFA European Football Championship 2012 and the beginning of the equally anticipated 30th Olympic Games in London. TCDC has therefore selected 4 movies that illustrate the lives of athletes beyond the field. These athletes have had to go through a tremendous amount of trials in their lives before they have gotten to where they are today, as representatives of their countries and champions of their fields.
Many athletes have said that their biggest competition is the one with themselves, and if they are able to overcome that they can overcome anything else in front of them.
Because for some people, sports is not just an exercise outlet but sports is their life… and their life is sports.

When Jake LaMotta steps into a boxing ring and obliterates his opponent, he’s a prizefighter portrayed in this Martin Scorsese film by Robert De Niro. But when he treats his family and friends the same way, he’s a ticking time bomb, ready to go off at any moment. Though LaMotta wants his family’s love, something always seems to come between them. Perhaps it’s his violent bouts of paranoia and jealousy. This kind of rage helped make him a champ, but in real life, he winds up in the ring alone.
