“Sustainable design” comprises of multiple dimensions: social, economic and environmental domains. Striking a balance among the three domains is hugely difficult, not only because it needs to optimize dissimilar dimensions but there are also countless approaches to sustainable design.

Among many attempt at achieving sustainable design, designers around the world have employed natural, safe, recycled and discarded materials. Some focus on using renewable resources and procure materials that supplied by responsible manufacturers. Novel strategies are developed and being employed such as life cycle assessment as a tool to evaluate level of environmental impact caused by a product. An application of Lean manufacturing is also being integrated into the production in many factories.

This talk will not focus specifically on product design and manufacturing but will discuss about design in multiple scales: architecture, interior design, material development as well as industrial products. How can we design sustainably? How should we go about achieving sustainable design? Can environmentally friendly design be high-tech?

The talk will begin with a presentation of the world’s latest innovative materials from Dr. Dararat Mekkriengkrai, Material Researcher, Material ConneXion Bangkok.

Join us and explore real approaches to sustainable design and gain more understanding about sustainability in a broader sense.
