April Story

Country: Japan
Year: 1998
Directed by: Shunji Iwai

This romantic Japanese short film is a good example of Japanese girl’s love story. Even if it is a simple love story; Shunji Iwai knows how to make it work by blending teenage love together with a canvas of Japanese culture and presents in a basic way. The title “April Story” represents the beginning of a new school year when the protagonist Uzuki Nireno first falls in love (in Japan, April is the New Year and the season of Sakura bloom). Iwai still sticks close to his personal style, creating remarkable scenes with attention in every detail. Also thanks to professional lighting technique of Noboru Shinoda, Iwai’s favorite cinematographer, the dreamy visual look makes the story more sentimental and memorable. Every element turns “April Snow” to a good combination of pure love, teenage problems and fairy tale tone. Shunji Iwai is regarded as the best director in Japanese film history.
