August 2013
Clothes are more than what we wear to cover our body. They are part of the wearer’s identity that tells their origin, social status, taste, etc. Clothing and fashion are constantly changing, depending on various factors such as history background, social customs, economics and climate.
Throughout August, the Visual Project shows the evolution of fashion, the popular trend in each period, and how the fashion business has grown into a major global industry it is today.

Karl Lagerfeld once said, ‘You cannot define fashion. As soon as you do it changes and you are out of fashion.’ Lagerfeld himself provides the main commentary in this, the first of three programmes on the story of fashion.
The different interpretations of fashion commonplaces are looked at in relation to the changing social backdrop and the evolution of the modern emancipated woman, and the film also deals engagingly with other aspects of fashion such as millinery, embroidery and even fashion illustration. Using archive footage, and interviews with key figures in the fashion world of today, the programme provides not only a survey of the evolution of fashion in modern times but amusing food for thought about the relationship between self-expression through clothing and social and cultural change.

Transient and superficial, or a serious business? The complex phenomenon of fashion itself is the subject of this film, the second in a series presented by leading designer Karl Lagerfeld. Beginning with the emergence of modern fashion design-the creation of a particular style and ‘look’-from the exclusive world of haute couture dressmaking in the early twentieth century, the programme examines the relationship between style and history, fashion and its social context. It highlights the influence of individual designers, from Jean Patou and Coco Chanel onwards, analyzing their very different approaches to the essential magic of creating ‘the right thing at the right moment’.

In the third in a series of three programmes, Karl Lagerfeld analyzes the keynote styles of the 1960s-80s, tracing the role of individual designers in originating and popularizing fashions. Through the adaptation of designers’ ideas by clothing companies producing for mass markets, these styles became-like the mid-1960s mini-skirt – the distinctive uniform of particular periods, taking the concept of ‘fashion’ to the opposite extreme from its earlier meaning as the favoured style of a privileged elite.
The film sets in the context of design history a rapid succession of popular recent and not-so-recent styles-from the clean lines of 1960s clothing to the transitional ‘maxi-coat plus mini-skirt’ look of the early 1970s, followed by folk and ethnic influences and the ultimate ‘dissent’ from fashion in punk street-style.
